An armed attack caused by the attempt to free an inmate, left a prison agent injured, after the incident that occurred in Zacapa.
The National Civil Police reported that at about 8:30 a.m., in front of the Zacapa Regional Hospital, an armed incident took place against personnel from the Penitentiary System.

The report details that they apparently tried to rescue the prisoner José Manuel Castro León, 50 years old. This deprived of liberty had been transferred to that hospital center for a medical appointment.
Separately, in May 2018, subjects who were driving aboard two vehicles released Castro León. While he was transferred to the Social Security hospital of that department.
The prison system agent is Amelio García, 45 years old. He is originally from San Miguel Chicaj, Baja Verapaz and was the one who was guarding the prisoner, who had an appointment at the External Consultation.

At the end of the medical appointment, they went to a nearby pharmacy to buy the medicine they had been prescribed. At that moment, men on motorcycles intercepted them and shot the guard.
The guard repelled the attack, and prevented the prisoner from being rescued, but received two gunshot wounds. This warranted that the agents of the Municipal Transit Police transferred him by motorcycle to the same care center.
The inmate emerged unharmed from the incident and was taken back to the Los Jocotes Preventive Center, Zacapa, aboard the ZAC 67 unit of the PNC.
José Manuel Castro León was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the crime of femicide and 15 years for the crime of rape, on October 26, 2021,
Along with Castro León, Hugo Leopoldo Aguirre Flores was also sentenced to 50 years in prison for the crime of femicide.
Both were found guilty of the death of a woman with whom Castro de León had a sentimental relationship.
The report mentions that the incident occurred on February 4, 2020 in the Piedra Redonda hamlet, Valle Dolores village, Esquipulas, Chiquimula.
Castro León was also sentenced for the rape of a 9-year-old minor, in 2019, in the Lomas de Santa Ana neighborhood, Esquipulas.
