The Binational Authority of Lake Titicaca (ALT) has started the first course for promoters of artificial reproduction of carachis, mauris and suches native fish from Lake Titicaca, aimed at fishermen from circumlacustrine towns in the Puno region (Peru), in order to promote the sustainable development of fishing activity in the area.
With this workshop, which takes place from July 21 to August 12, the ALT seeks to train fishermen in artificial reproduction techniques of native fish for the population and repopulation of Lake Titicaca and other high Andean lagoons, as a strategy for conservation of fishery resources.
30 fishermen between men and women participate in the course. Various topics will be taught, from the causes that affect fish populations, closure systems, ecological aspects, and mainly artificial reproduction techniques, which include fertilization, incubation, embryonic development “in situ”.
The Executive President of the ALT, Juan Ocola Salazar, affirmed that the execution of these courses is aimed at reversing the dramatic situation that the fishing resources of Lake Titicaca are going through. “It is the first time that we carry out these activities and they will be increased to various places in Peru and Bolivia,” he said.
The course was attended by residents and artisanal fishermen from the circumlacustrine area of Lake Titicaca in the Lagunillas lagoon and Lake Arapa. Its execution received the support of the Special Project for Lake Titicaca (PELT), Imarpe and Direpro. “We seek to reactivate the fishing activity of the lake in a participatory manner,” concluded Ocola, INFOREGIÓN was informed.
