They stop “The Wave” in Challenge Cup

San Diego Wave FC fell 2-3 after goals from Sophia Smith (‘4) and Hina Sugita (’21, ’41) were scored for the Thorns.

Smith received a ball from Morgan Weaver and fired a left-footed shot into the side of the goal net, past Carly Telford’s left side. Hina Sugita made her way onto the scoresheet with a diving header in the 21st minute off a rebound from Christen Sinclair’s shot. He scored another goal in the 41st minute with a left footed shot from Telford, marking the first two goals for him as Thorn.

San Diego came in at the half and quickly changed momentum in the 46th minute when Alex Morgan found Belle Briede in the box to score his first career goal.

Taylor Kornieck came on for Wave FC in the 67th minute and scored his first goal for San Diego within seconds of being on the field. The six-foot-two midfielder scored with her head off a Kelsey Turnbow corner kick.

San Diego’s loss to the PTFC halted their chances of reaching the 2022 Challenge Cup semifinals for the West region. They will return to the Torero Stadium on Saturday, April 23 to face OL Reign in the final match of the Challenge Cup.
