They steal 400 bulletproof vests destined for Ukraine | Univision 41 New York WXTV

This Wednesday New York authorities reported the theft of 400 bulletproof vests for Ukraine, which were delivered to a non-profit organization, to support the country that was invaded by Russia on February 24.

Around 9:15 a.m. NYPD responded to a break-in call informing them “that approximately 400 bulletproof vests were removed” from the offices of the U.S. Ukrainian Congressional Committee and the National League of Women of the United States. of Ukraine, at 203 Second Ave., near 12 St. in Manhattan.

images of the security camera from a neighboring business shows three vans stopping outside the building and how hooded men were removing several boxes from that building. It is considered that the stolen vests were in those boxes.

The 400 bulletproof vests were donated by the police

NYPD Sgt. Edward Riley reported that the vests had been donated by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and although used, they were in good condition.

The city of New York has declared its support for Ukraine and has been working on sending tactical gear to people in the war zone. Those donations include hundreds of bulletproof vests, donated by the city’s police departments, to charities helping Ukraine.

Various police departments stop using bulletproof vests after five years, but officials say they are still tough enough to offer protection in war.

Bulletproof vests were to be worn by doctors and civilians

“It is despicable for someone to break into a building to steal supplies and materials intended to help those affected by this humanitarian crisis,” Vicki DiStefano, a spokeswoman for Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., told NBC.

Andrij Dobriansky, a spokesman for the Ukraine Congressional US Committee, said last week that the plan was for the donated equipment to be flown to Poland and then transported to Ukraine.

It was also reported that the items were to be used by medical and civil security teams, including citizens who have joined the fight against the Russian army, not by the Ukrainian soldiers themselves.
