They started stealing Hyundai and Kia with a simple USB cable ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – Auto

It turns out that on models from previous years without an immobilizer, the engine can be started with a USB cable. A group of car thieves called the Kia Boys have been posting videos of them successfully stealing Kia and Hyundai models using a simple USB cable. According to Automotive News, these cars of certain years of production do not even have a simple immobilizer, and if you connect a USB cable to a specific connector, you can start the engine without a key.

The other end of the cable is supposed to be connected to a computer with some special software. The wave of Kia and Hyundai car thefts began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, last year. Thefts are up a whopping 2,644%. There are cases where, according to police data, 20 cars are stolen a day. The perpetrators are mainly targeting 2011 Kia vehicles and 2015 Hyundai models.

Police in the city have even started handing out mechanical steering wheel locks to owners of these models to prevent theft. A Kia America dealership said it is aware of these theft statistics and all vehicles from these production years will be retrofitted with an immobilizer.
