Sánchez took advantage of the speech to announce that he will speak with Parliament to extend the state of emergency for another two weeks to combat the new coronavirus pandemic. Spain has been under quarantine since March 14 and the state of emergency is scheduled to end on April 12. The two-week extension would extend it until April 26 for a total of six weeks under quarantine.
“We need to maintain the measures for two more weeks. I understand how difficult it is to prolong this effort and sacrifice for two more weeks, ”said Sánchez, according to Europapress.
The leader of the main opposition party has already said he will support the government when it asks Parliament for the extension in a session this week. It will be the second extension that Sánchez requests.
The strict limitations that force people to stay at home with the exception of outlets to buy food and medicine, as well as the closure of non-essential industries, have helped Spain to reduce its rate of contagion of coronavirus, which was above the 20% last week to 6% on Saturday.
