ERP. In Piura, the first mortality factor is breast cancer and doctors detect 100 new cases of this disease per year, according to figures from the Ministry of Health (Minsa). Given this situation, the campaign called “Enroute! Piura along the health route”. This initiative seeks to give women in the north access to timely treatment to prevent an increase in the rate of those diagnosed with this pathology in the region.

Women, from the age of 35, will be able to approach the health establishments of Piura and Castilla to carry out their clinical examination with trained obstetric professionals. These studies consist of reviewing the breasts and identifying the presence of a tumor. Another method is the mammography that is applied in the Hospital de la Amistad Perú Corea Santa Rosa. This study allows to see the texture and conformation of the glandular tissue such as the vascular structures, as well as the ducts of the breast, where lesions can be detected.
Due to ignorance, most patients go to a specialist when the disease is in an advanced stage. Likewise, they desist from undergoing a biopsy, because they believe that if they touch the tumor the disease will be activated. In the most remote areas of the region, there are men who prevent their wives from undergoing a breast study. At other times, they hide or refuse any kind of attention.
The regional coordinator of the strategy against cancer of Diresa Piura, Brandy Espinoza Rojas, revealed that, during the first quarter of this year, the number of diagnosed cases has increased from 10% to 15% compared to the same period of the pre-pandemic.
“In 2020 and 2021 there is an apparent decrease in cases due to the Covid-19 issue. Services are currently being resumed and we have detected an increase in those diagnosed. Those people who have survived the pandemic are approaching health facilities to get checked and find out that they have cancer “commented the specialist.
Finally, the campaign “On the road! Piura through the health route” highlights the importance of decentralizing health services such as breast cancer screening, at the national level, in order to mitigate the mortality rate of this pathology.
