They set a European temperature record in Sicily

The Sicilian Meteorological Service measured almost fifty degrees Celsius at 14:00 CET near Syracuse. The previous temperature record fell on Athens, where in 1977 they recorded 48 degrees Celsius. In the south of the Italian island, temperatures in the afternoon were around 45 degrees. In the area, a temperature of 48.5 degrees Celsius was measured in 1999. However, the record was not confirmed at that time, because it was reported by a meteorological station that was not certified.

The heat wave in Italy is forecast to continue until the beginning of next week. Temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days, especially in central and northern Italy. The highest values are expected at the weekend. On Friday, the Italian Ministry of Health issued a warning against very high temperatures in 15 Italian cities, including Rome, Florence and Palermo.

Forest fires intensified in southern Italy. In Calabria, the authorities called in the army to fight the fire. A man died in a fire in the southern Italian region, the ANSA agency said on Wednesday. The number of fire victims has risen to three since the beginning of August.

Temperatures have risen to 40 degrees in the southern and central regions of Spain, the EFE agency said. The nights and mornings will be very warm until the end of the week. In some parts of the country, temperatures should rise to 44 degrees Celsius from Thursday. According to a spokesman for the Spanish meteorological service Aemet, Spain is facing “extreme and unusually high temperatures for this summer season”.

A very strong heat warning will apply in Catalonia and Aragon from Thursday. In eight other regions, including Andalusia and Madrid, this will be a strong warning. The heat should save only the northeastern regions, such as Galicia or Cantabria. The Ministry of Health warned of complications, especially for the elderly and people with health problems.

Today, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for “maximum cooperation and caution” in preventing forest fires and protecting the environment. He pointed to the very serious situation in Italy, Turkey and Greece, where Spanish firefighters are also helping. In Spain, the situation is much more favorable so far.

The large influx of warm air from Africa to both countries is caused by the high pressure above the Mediterranean Sea, which the Italian media gave Lucifer the name. In addition to the heat, sand dust from the Sahara is also expected in Spain.
