The president of the Spanish government Pedro Sánchez announced this Saturday the sending of 5,000 soldiers and 5,000 additional police officers to the areas devastated by the floods, which have so far left 211 dead.
In a televised message from the Moncloa Palace, Sánchez said that he had accepted the request of the regional authorities of Valencia to send the contingent to guarantee security.
«The priority is to save lives. We have activated the largest deployment that has already carried out 4,800 rescues and has helped more than 30,000 people in flooded homes, roads and industrial estates,” explained the Spanish leader on the social network X.
Recovering and identifying the bodies of the deceased is one of the government’s objectives, Sánchez added. “It must be done quickly and with all the guarantees and dignity that the victims and their families deserve,” he stated.
In addition to the fatalities, dozens of people remain missing after the floods caused by the storm, unprecedented in the region.
Likewise, the government will approve in the Council of Ministers next Tuesday the declaration of a seriously affected area for those places that have been hardest hit by the dana. They will be areas of the Community of Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, Catalonia and Aragon
