Castro authorities seized 1,614 pounds of cheese in the municipality of Placetas, in the province of Villa Clara, which were headed to Havana for informal sale.
According to the official Facebook profile ‘Fuerza del Pueblo’, which has links to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), the seizure of the cheese was the result of an operation carried out during the early hours of March 21, when the product was aboard a Yutong bus.
So far, it is known that 13 people were detained by the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) because they were related to the case.
The arrest was made because the actions committed by the subjects go against the agreements established with state entities to guarantee the supply of milk and dairy products to the people, especially children.
Castro’s propaganda states that the confiscated cheese was delivered in its entirety to a dairy processor that will improve its quality and use it for social consumption.
The news generated outrage among Internet users, who were in favor of the measure. They argued that the confiscated cheese was destined to be exchanged for fuel, something that the inhabitants of Havana have had to do due to the scarcity of resources in the capital.
Some others claimed that confiscation of cheese was the “best” thing to do, as the price that this product fetches in the informal market is considerably higher than normal prices, yet state stores often lack it.
