With a unique operation, doctors helped a 4-year-old child and saved his leg from amputation. The intervention is done for the first time in our country.
4-year-old Sarp suffers from a malignant disease – Ewing’s Sarcoma. The tumor has covered the child’s right leg, and in order to save his life, doctors offer an extreme solution – amputation.
The father, who has a leg amputated after a work accident, and the mother flatly refuse.
Doctors from two Plovdiv hospitals unite and perform a 6-hour operation at Eurohospital hospital. A large part of the leg has been removed. The child was fitted with a double-growing endoprosthesis made by 3D printing abroad.
“In this case, it was simply necessary, since it is a small child, that the prosthesis should be designed in such a way that it can grow both at the expense of the hip and the knee, why amputate something when it can be saved”, Prof. Vladimir Stavrev, orthopedist at St. George UMBAL.
“The limb will be spared from the knee until the soft tissue structures heal.” After that, we hope that he will be able to walk like any normal person,” added Prof. Lyuben Stokov, orthopedist at Eurohospital UMBAL.
Treatment will continue with chemotherapy.
“I want him to play and run normally with the other children. I am very, very grateful that they saved my child,” said Gullu Mahmud, the boy’s mother.
