The city’s Health Department has released new death figures from the coronavirus including a new number of nearly 4,000 deaths that had not been counted as victims of the pandemic.
Added the new figure to those that already existed, the death toll in the city exceeds 10,000 victims.
Of these “new” deaths included in the registry of victims of the coronavirus, Latinos continue to be the group with the highest number of deaths (24.1%).
The new deaths in the statistic are of people in nursing homes, assisted living centers or private houses who were never tested but who are likely to have died of coronavirus in the last month, according to the authorities report.
Although these deaths have not been included in the publicly announced counts thus far, city health officials have been cataloging these additional people, examining their symptoms and medical histories.
By including deaths, the city acknowledges that limited testing makes it impossible to know exactly how many people have died from coronavirus.
NY1 reporter Gloria Pazmino referred to the new figures, noting that the city released numbers today “showing a massive increase in New Yorkers likely to have died from COVID-19.”
