Information on the effectiveness of the third (booster) dose of the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine shows a sharp decline in the risk of severe illness shortly after its administration, writes Reuters.
The data, announced by the Israeli Ministry of Health, were published after an inspection in the medical journal Lancet.
From July to September, when the Delta variant predominated, specialists tracked more than 1.4 million people vaccinated with two doses at least five months earlier. Half of them had received a third dose at least a week before being included in the study.
Those who received a booster dose had a 93 percent lower risk of hospitalization because of Kovid-19, 92 percent lower risk of serious illness, and 81 percent lower risk of death due to Kovid-19.
The average age of the people covered by the study was 52 years. Participants in both groups received or did not receive a booster dose, lived similarly and their health was similar.
The study was not randomly controlled and the data did not prove a causal relationship. How long the defense lasts is not yet clear. None of the participants was followed for more than two months, and for half the period was less than two weeks.
