They reveal that Steve Jobs wanted the original iPhone to have no SIM card slot
During a recent interview at the Computer History Museum (California, USA), iPod and iPhone inventor Tony Fadell revealed that Steve Jobs wanted the original iPhone to be a perfect device that didn’t include a card slot SIM.
According to Fadell, who is also the founder and former CEO of Nest Labs and currently serves as director of global investment and advisory firm Future Shape, Jobs was apparently interested in using Code Division Multiple Access (CDM) technology. its acronym in English) to connect iPhones directly to the operator’s network without the need for physical SIM cards.
However, availability of that technology was very limited at the time, so Fadell had to show Jobs the market data to convince him that adopting CDMA was not a viable option for the iPhone.
Late last year, rumors began to surface that the iPhone 15 Pro models might do without the physical SIM card slot, at least in some countries and regions.
In fact, according to a seemingly legitimate document from an anonymous tipster obtained by MacRumors, Apple reportedly advised major US carriers to prepare for the launch of eSIM-only smartphones starting in September 2022. .
With this date in mind, it’s even possible that Apple will remove the SIM card slot on some iPhone 14 models, instead of the iPhone 15 as originally rumored.
Still, iPhones will still need to offer a SIM slot in countries where the digital format isn’t available, while in those it is it may be optional, as consumers could choose a version with or without a SIM slot. Until now, there are already more than 60 countries that support eSIM.
