The official press has recognized an increase in physical attacks committed against health professionals in the province of Guantánamo, due to popular discontent with the current situation of the self-proclaimed medical power.
According to state journalist Miguel Reyes Mendoza, known on social networks as Miguel Noticias, he reported that several doctors have been attacked by relatives of people who usually receive poor treatment in hospitals due to the shortage of medicines and supplies.
These alleged violent attacks are committed within the hospital centers themselves, especially in the Guard Corps area of the ‘Docente Agustinho Neto’ General Hospital.
The communicator points out that the attacks are often carried out with edged weapons, but also with fists.
“It has become common for doctors to be attacked, either with a knife or with their fists, simply because they want to solve problems that they should have foreseen in advance.”
Ignoring the shortcomings of the hospitals, the state reporter tried to blame the people for the situation, pointing out that many of these accidents could have been avoided.
“What is the fault of doctors for accidents or street brawls? “What is the fault of doctors that they arrive at health units with illnesses, pathologies, or injuries, caused by carelessness and little prevention?” He adds.
The communicator affirms that he has received reports of attacks made against doctors of all specialties, including surgeons, orthopedics, ophthalmologists, pediatricians, cardiologists, nurses and assistance personnel.
“In a context where needs and precariousness increase, malpractice abounds, where perhaps urgency depends on resources and prior and exhaustive diagnoses, hitting a doctor speaks of human misery, speaks of the educational precariousness of those who carry out such acts,” he added, once again ignoring the shortcomings that may be experienced in the country’s hospitals due to the worst economic crisis that the Island has experienced in its history.
The state reporter briefly acknowledged that there were cases of mistreatment of the population by the Cuban public health system, but that these were “very rare.”
Likewise, he stated that there were ways to denounce the bad actions of these doctors. However, what he did not mention is that these types of complaints are usually classified as “false” by the official press, which refuses to recognize the population’s problems.
