They rebuke Felipe de la Mata for endorsing a qualified majority of deputies

Mexico City. The magistrate of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), Felipe De la Mata Pizaña, was called a “traitor of Mexican democracy” in front of dozens of students, former magistrates and director of the UNAM Law Faculty, for having voted in favor of dismissing the challenges against the qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies.

In the middle of the presentation of his book “Las Heridas” in the Aula Magna “Jacinto Pallares” of this faculty, the magistrate was rebuked by federal judge Karina Ibarra, who defended herself, and holding a Mexican flag in her arms, she She said that the work that was presented inspired her to write a historical novel about today’s Mexico.

“You, Mr. Felipe De la Mata Pizaña, will be one of my historical protagonists who will appear as the traitor of Mexican democracy for having voted for the supermajority that we Mexicans do not vote for,” he said as he stood up between the seats in said auditorium.

In his defense, De la Mata Pizaña responded that before accusing him, he should read the Constitution and the sentences that he has brought to the full court, although at that moment the judge had already left the classroom.

“I believe that the judge has not read my sentences, if she had approached me to talk we could have spoken, but I imagine that shouting is how she wants to express her feelings,” the magistrate replied.

However, he pointed out that he also shares this feeling of anger against the judicial reform that he showed, because he reiterated that “the democratic election of judges was not a good idea.”

On August 31, Judge Felipe De la Mata voted to dismiss the challenges filed by opposition parties against the assignment of multi-member deputies in the lower house. For this reason, the judge accused him of having endorsed “the qualified supermajority.”

De la Mata Pizaña was also one of those in charge of preparing the project for the qualification and validity of the presidential election, who considered that the morning conferences of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not influence the decision of the citizens’ vote, since His expressions on electoral matters were not systematic.
