A Brazilian man has died of hypothermia after being mistakenly placed in a mortuary freezer after being pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital where he was being treated.
Police are currently investigating the case of Jose Ribeiro da Silva from the city of Uruashu for manslaughter after his relatives reported to the authorities, local online publication informed “The Globe”.
The man was “declared” dead on November 29, then was placed in a bag and taken to the morgue, where he was placed in one of the cold storage rooms to avoid decomposition until his burial.
He was then transferred to the funeral home in Rialma, his hometown, about 100 kilometers from Uruashu. When the workers took him out of the sack to prepare the body for burial, they discovered that he was alive: his eyes were open and he was breathing heavily.
Funeral home staff immediately called 911 and the man was transported to a hospital where he died on 1 December.
Doctors and relatives of the deceased are expected to be heard next week to establish all the circumstances of the accident.
