These are two new and advanced nuclear-powered submarines, one capable of carrying long-range strategic missiles and the other can be loaded with different classes of missiles.

Aerial images show part of the flag-raising ceremony of the Russian Navy on the advanced nuclear-powered submarines Kniaz Oleg and Novosibirsk, which took place on Tuesday at the Sevmash shipyard in the city of Severodvinsk.

The two new submersibles will soon join the Pacific Fleet of the Navy, thereby “significantly increasing its combat potential“, as stressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Kniaz Oleg strategic submarine, of the Boréi-A class, has been conceived as means of nuclear deterrence. It can operate at depths between 400 and 480 meters, with an autonomy of 90 days (limited only by the amount of food and water it stores). In addition, it has the capacity to carry 16 Bulava strategic missile launchers, with a 8,000 kilometer range.

Meanwhile, the Novosibirsk ship is part of the project 885M Yasen-M (called Graney in the NATO coding). The submarines in this project, capable of diving to depths of up to 600 meters, have 24 cruise missiles arranged in eight vertical shuttles.

All of these are multifunctional and can be loaded with various classes of missiles, ranging from antibuque 3M55 Onix —24 missiles, three in each silo — and the antibuque X-35, until the X-101 nuclear warhead carriers or those of ground attack system ZM-14E P-900 Club, with a range of 5,000 kilometers. In the near future, these ships could also carry Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, whose tests have just concluded in the country.
