The EU is aiming for a single charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones, according to a European Commission proposal presented at a unprecedented global initiativewhich will affect Apple, maker of the iPhone, more than its rivals.
The measure has been more than 10 years in the making, and the European Union executive has promised that will bring environmental benefits and annual savings of 293 million dollars for users. Under the Commission’s proposal, a USB-C connector will become the standard port for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld game consoles.

Chargers will also be sold separately from electronic devices. The EU executive will soon review its eco-design regulation so that the external power supply is supported with all models, which is the last step for a common load.
Apple has opposed the proposal. “We remain concerned that strict regulations imposing only one type of connector will stifle innovation rather than encourage it., which in turn will hurt consumers in Europe and around the world,” the company said in a statement. European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton dismissed Apple’s comments.
I have known these companies for years. Every time we present a proposal, they start saying ‘oh, it will be against innovation’. No, it is not against innovation, it is not against anyone. Like everything the Commission does, it’s for consumers,” he said.
The proposal needs a green light from Member States and EU lawmakers, after which companies will have two years to adapt your devices.
