Health and Transport Departments Promote Use of Masks on Public and Private Transport

At the Paseo La Merced Bus Terminal in Chillán, the Health Department and the Transport and Telecommunications Department joined forces to disseminate prevention measures aimed at promoting the use of masks on public and private transport. This initiative comes in response to the increasing number of respiratory viruses recorded in the country.

Ximena Salinas, head of the Health Department, highlighted the importance of wearing masks in containing the spread of respiratory diseases, particularly when individuals exhibit symptoms associated with winter pathologies. Salinas emphasized that the recommendation to use masks extends to crowded places, in addition to frequent hand washing and covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. To raise awareness about the importance of mask usage, both authorities distributed masks to passengers of intercommunal buses.

Salinas also emphasized the relevance of self-care measures during the winter season, which is characterized by high viral circulation, including cases of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza. The latter disease primarily affects individuals over the age of 65, prompting Salinas to reiterate the call for people to avail themselves of the more than 70 vaccinations available in the 21 communes of Ñuble. She stressed the importance of accessing inoculation before the winter period progresses further.

Javier Isla, from the Transport and Telecommunications Department, expressed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the measures recommended by the Health Authority. Isla highlighted the importance of reinforcing self-care measures and emphasized that the use of masks serves as a tool to prevent contagion. The Ministry of Health (Minsal) will make masks available, and the Transport portfolio will coordinate with operators to ensure people can access them. Isla stressed that the use of masks on public transport is a collective effort to protect everyone.
