They present ‘Coppél-i’ at the 52nd International Cervantino Festival

Guanajuato, Gto., Coppél-i.Athe most recent work by French choreographer Jean Christophe Maillot, the master of reinterpreting the classics, is an innovative and contemporary vision of human connection in a world where technology and illusion can replace reality.

Easa was the piece that the Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo company presented this weekend at the 52nd International Cervantino Festival (FIC), a show that impressed the Mexican public with its technical and artistic excellence. The dancers showed expressive work and movements of great physical vigor, which took the viewer into a story of love and illusion.

The character of Coppél-i.A It symbolizes the perfection that Dr. Coppelius seeks. The main dancer, with precision it acts like an automaton that comes to life. It is notable how Maillot plays with the classic technique and the movements of his main character, to reveal a dream world in circular shapes, whose chiaroscuro lighting captured the silent existence of technology in our lives.

With a fluid and exciting narrative, composed of movements that reflect the passion and confusion of the characters, the French choreographer rethinks in this work the themes and emotions of the classic ballet Coppelia.

The protagonists of the story face confusion and doubt in their search for truth and reality, but Malliot also gives a futuristic look at artificial intelligence (AI) and its possibilities, and the innate human defects of falling in love with one’s own fantasy.

Despite being criticized by some specialists for his experimental and complex approach, Jean-Christophe captivated the public with this futuristic and modern idea that was enriched with music, created, precisely, with AI, from the arrangements made by Bertrand Maillot on the score by Léo Delibes.

The proposal of the director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo confirms that he has not stopped marveling at the bodies of the dancers, for the aesthetics and elegance that he expresses through them to tell the story of Coppél-i.A.

On its return to the Cervantino, the French company was applauded for the ingenuity of its creator in renewing the classic Coppélia whose ending invites us to reflect on how far AI and the creation of humanoids will go.
