They present an agenda to combat gender violence and promote equality in San Juan de Lurigancho

Adolescents and young women propose measures to solve the problems of gender violence, teenage pregnancy, street harassment, among others.

In Women’s Month, the worrying situation of gender violence in Peru stands out. According to the report from the Crime Observatory of the Public Ministry, from January 2009 to October 2023, 1,758 victims have been registered nationwide. In Metropolitan Lima, San Juan de Lurigancho leads the list of districts with the highest number of femicides, with a total of 52 cases, which classifies it as an area with a very high occurrence of this type of violence.

In the midst of this context, 110 adolescent and young women from San Juan de Lurigancho presented the agenda for equality, a project that arises after more than two years of advocacy work in the district and that aims to generate conditions for the full exercise of sexual and reproductive rights, as well as reducing cases of gender violence.

It should be noted that some of the problems that the young women identified in the SJL district were teenage pregnancy, prevention of gender violence, lack of attention to sexual and reproductive health, street harassment, different types of bullying, lack of implementation of comprehensive sexual education in schools, among others, which is why they offer some measures to combat them.

  1. Gender violence. They propose the implementation of stricter sanctions in the justice system in cases of virtual violence. In addition, they advocate carrying out awareness campaigns about violence in virtual spaces, the creation of a student network to communicate and accompany cases of gender violence within schools, and the dissemination of information materials that publicize the spaces of report any type of violence.
  2. Comprehensive sexual education. They request greater training for teachers on this topic, as well as the implementation of comprehensive sexual education in schools to prevent unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and sexual violence.
  3. Attention to sexual and reproductive health for adolescents. They recommend the implementation of more differentiated spaces for adolescents in health centers, health posts and hospitals, with flexible schedules adapted to the availability of minors. In addition, they suggest training with a gender focus for health personnel.
  4. Teenage pregnancy prevention. They propose guaranteeing information and access to contraceptive methods for adolescents, promoting art spaces to promote sexual and reproductive rights, and involving parents in the process, guaranteeing access to being informed about reproductive health without prejudice.

The teenagers presented the proposals to the Congress of the Republic, district mayors, municipalities, MINSA and CEM.

After training for 2 years, the adolescents and young women held awareness and education sessions in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho, reaching 11,739 people, including women, men and people of diversity. In addition, they consolidated the information received into a self-care guide for their feminist activities that has the support of the Municipal Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents of SJL. And they contributed to the development and monitoring of an Ordinance against street harassment in San Juan de Lurigancho and the construction of a District and Digital Strategy in collaboration with the Mental Health Consultation Committee.
