They pay tribute to El Santo on the 107th anniversary of his birth

Tulancingo, Hgo. How every September 23, family, neighbors and gladiators paid a simple but emotional tribute to Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, better known as “El Santo, masked in silver”, in his native Tulancingo this Monday morning.

Some of the fighters who came wore their multicolored masks and others their abundant hair.

There were also wrestling fans who arrived in wheelchairs.

Despite the cold weather, about fifty admirers of “El Santo” gathered in front of the effigy located in the old train station of Tulancingo, where according to his relatives, from a very young age he left for Mexico City to succeed as fighter and where he was forged as a national idol.

But before arriving in the capital of the country, he spent the night for some time in Pachuca, capital of Hidalgo, where he participated in some fights in the old Arena La Afificación, on Cuauhtémoc Avenue.

During the ceremony, representatives of the DTU Mexican Professional Wrestling organization, as well as students from its two training schools for future fighters, attended to pay tribute to the greatest master of pankration, which is defined as a gymnastic combat of Greek origin, which was very fashionable among the Romans, in which fighting, boxing and all kinds of means were legal to overthrow or defeat the opponent.

After placing floral arrangements at the feet of the unique effigy, some of the speakers who participated in the tribute pointed out that El Santo is an example for young people, since through the 52 films he starred in, they served to inspire the young people to develop their bodies through gymnastics, athletics and other physical activities, and which served to keep them away from drug addictions.

Lorena García, Morenista mayor of Tulancingo, said that “El Santo” is “a source of inspiration for multiple generations, more than 100 years after his birth.”

Despite the date, the old gallery that was enabled as the Museum of the Saint, located a few meters from the effigy as well as the train station, remained closed this Monday.

The requests made by the citizens of Tulancingo to make an exception on Monday and open it so they could take their boys and girls to the exhibition were of no use, but it was of no use.
