They order the closure of INCAA and suspend employees

President Javier Milei ordered the closure of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA), to reduce its budget, limit its operation and relocate personnel. In this way, its workers will receive a mandatory license until the internal reorganization of the entity is completed, the final date of which has not been determined.

The measure was announced this Monday the 22nd, in the Official Gazette, and details how the organization chart of the institution will be formed; The managements that will be maintained will be the General, Legal Affairs, Administration and Finance and Public Policies. Thus, only those four areas will remain and the departments of Development, Institutional Affairs, Exhibition and Audiences, and Audiovisual Activity Supervision will be eliminated.

The future of INCAA

For its part, and within the Omnibus Law project, the Government specified the modification of the financing of the Film Institute, at the same time that it suspended hiring, support and institutional contributions and the payment of overtime.

Union representatives stated that the theaters that depend on the organization would not operate either (in terms of commercial exhibition and premieres), however, the functions corresponding to the Bafici 2024 Festival scheduled for this Monday at the Gaumont cinema, one of the most important of the event.

The current director of INCAA appointed by President Milei to undermine the institute is Carlos Pirovano, an economist who has no experience in the audiovisual sector. The Government’s strategy with the institute appears to be similar to that used in Télam, which under the excuse of an analysis of its operation remains closed and with its workers fighting for the right to information and their jobs.
