“We will start cooling the ice on May 9, and we assume that our youth will be able to skate on it on May 16, so they will also complete summer training on skates,” said the administrator of the city’s sports facilities Jaroslav Marušin.
He added that the annual operating costs in a new passive building with better insulation will be about two thirds lower than in the old winter stadium. Construction, which began last February, cost about 4.84 million euros, with two million euros from the state subsidy. The project became more expensive by approximately 850,000 euros, mainly due to additional construction work and related supplies of material, the price of which also increased.
“The company that built it is therefore in a deep deficit, which I am sorry about, but we cannot pay them the difference because it would break the law. I am therefore grateful that the builders nevertheless completed the work. If we built the hall now, its price would be 50 percent higher, ” stated the mayor of Poprad Anton Danko.
The new hall, which is connected to the winter stadium and also has a common engine room, has a capacity of 200 people in the auditorium. It includes changing rooms, sanitary facilities, a buffet and facilities needed for players, athletes and referees.
Architect Pavel Kučera tried to design the building to resemble a cradle, as the city of Poprad is considered a Slovak “hatchery” of hockey talents. “We wanted the new training hall to be a modern and timeless building. It is not complicated, it has a dominant arch and all other parts of this building are simple in appearance, ” explained Pavel Kučera.
The hall is, among other things, equipped with an automatic disinfection system or a drying room for equipment.
Roman Tomas, the head and manager of the Prague hockey youth, believes that the new hall will attract more children from the city, but also from the surrounding region. There are currently about 250 children in the training process in Poprad. “I think we could train 500 children here, thanks to this hall they will get the opportunity to improve,” Roman Tomas stated.
At the same time, the new operation will increase the number of hours on the ice, so children will not have to go to training early in the morning.
