The Nordic Reading Room opens in the Metropolitan Library from today. Doctor of Scandinavian studies and cultural associate at the Norwegian embassy in our country Ivan Tenev informed the BNR about this.
“Over 500 titles are included in the fund. The main part of the books are from the personal library of the television journalist and critic Vesa Gancheva, donated by her sister to the library. The reading room with Nordic literature includes, in addition to Denmark, Sweden and Norway, also Finland and Iceland. I.e. we called the reading room “Nordic” because it covers a wider area than Northern Europe. The purpose of the reading room is for people to get access to literature, not only fiction, but also translation.
Our other ambition is for the reading room to become a kind of cultural and information center for the Nordic countries. There is already an initiative to hold meetings with readers once a month to discuss topics about the North. The venture is in its infancy and we hope to develop it in the future. The initiators are the embassies of the already mentioned countries without Iceland, but also the Metropolitan Library, to which I give special thanks. The support of Prof. Vera Gancheva. The books she donated from Vasa Gancheva’s library laid the foundation for the reading room fund. We will continue the series of cultural performances on Thursday, March 8. Then again together with the Metropolitan Library, the Embassy of Norway organized a seminar entitled “Literature by Women”. The main guest will be the Norwegian writer and journalist. We hope to have a good discussion with the participation of Bulgarian women writers. Milena Fuchedjieva, Lyudmila Filipova, Kristin Dimitrova, Ekaterina Yosifova, Prof. Gancheva, so I invite you from 5.00 p.m. all in the “Faith” hall of the Metropolitan Library.”
