Few car enthusiasts know, but during Soviet times, engineers of the German automobile concern Porsche collaborated with the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. So, recently they wrote about this on the social network Instagram from the account of the Porsche Museum, publishing a previously unknown sketch that showed a promising Lada car made by Porsche engineers.
The picture released by the Porsche Museum shows a two-box car that was intended to be either a short station wagon or a hatchback with increased luggage space. This is exactly what the Germans wanted the “people’s” car to look like for citizens of the USSR.
The unique drawing is dated 1975.
The main feature of the German design of the car is the headlights, made in a round shape, as on the VAZ-2103 and VAZ-2106. This decision, apparently, was dictated by the desire to unify the car with the Ladas already existing at that time.
It is known that Porsche Engineering formally joined the Lada Samara project only in 1979. But, as we see, specialists from the German automaker began collaborating with the Volzhsky Automobile Plant much earlier. For example, in 1976, Porsche also proposed to modernize the VAZ-2103 model, which, according to the German company’s plan, was to deprive the “troika” of chrome elements and metal bumpers, as well as change its design of the radiator grille and front console.

The Soviet side did not appreciate the presented project and rejected it. At that time, VAZ already had the VAZ-2106 ready, which was a simpler and cheaper car to produce.
