In San Antonio Oeste, the rally began shortly before 10 a.m. in Plaza Centenario. Later, a crowd marched through the city center in defense of the public university, in a context of economic crisis that affects both students and other sectors of society.
Retirees and health workers joined the march of the university students, who are also being hit by the current situation in the country. This mobilization is part of a series of protests that aim to make visible the rejection of the veto of the University Financing Law by President Javier Milei. The law, approved by both houses of Congress, guaranteed an adequate budget for the operation of public universitieswhich has generated strong opposition in the educational community. This Wednesday’s march is the second large national demonstration since Milei assumed the presidency, after a first mobilization on April 23. Mario Pezzatti, general secretary of ATE San Antonio Oeste, participated in the march and expressed his concern about the situation in the country: «The context is complicated for everyone, but today we are accompanying this university march because the situation is very worrying. “The government is taking measures that affect the most vulnerable sectors, such as the dismissal of 65,000 workers, which is a genocidal act.”
Pezzatti also highlighted the importance of free public universities for the working class: «It is essential that our children can access education. However, the government seems not to take into account the seriousness of this situation, and is privatizing services that have always been profitable. At the local level, the union leader also referred to the crisis of the health system in the province of Río Negro, particularly in the San Antonio Este hospital: «We are collaborating from the CTA to bring supplies to the hospital. “It is a time to unite as a working class, leaving aside political differences, to confront these adjustment policies that are affecting us.”
