Students, teachers, members of political organizations, unions and human rights defenders will participate today in a march in defense of public education in Argentina.

The demonstration will begin at 3:30 p.m., local time, and the participants will converge on the way from the Congress to Plaza de Mayo, in this capital, while similar actions will be carried out in other cities and the Federation of University Teachers will carry out a strike.

The march was called by the Trade Union Front of National Universities, the Argentine University Federation (which represents more than two million students) and the Interuniversity Council, which brings together the authorities of more than 50 higher education centers.

Likewise, the General Confederation of Labor, the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, the State Workers Association, the Justicialist Party, the Cámpora, the Radical Civic Union, the Workers’ Central (CTA) and the CTA-Autonomous confirmed their participation. , among many other organizations.

The governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, will also attend, and the initiative was supported by former president Alberto Fernández.

According to the organizers, it is expected to be a massive demonstration and the central event will take place at 6:00 p.m., local time, in the square, where a joint statement will be read.

Recently, the University of Buenos Aires declared a budget emergency and warned that it will only be able to function for a few months.

The scenario is also difficult for other centers of its type due to the decision of the La Libertad Avanza Executive to maintain the 2023 budget values ​​in 2024, despite the record of an interannual inflation of 276 percent.

The critical situation caused by President Javier Milei, the general attack on education and the recent statement by deputy Bertie Benegas demanding freedom to legitimize child labor, raise the need for a unified response to defend the free, secular and public university. of quality, says a statement from the Front.
