The Phoenix Rising documentary about the toxic relationship between actress Evan Rachel Wood and rocker Marilyn Manson will be screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Variety reported.
The director is Oscar nominee Amy Berg, who is the author of the film about Janice Joplin “Janice: The Little Girl is Sad”. The premiere of the two-part documentary “Phoenix Rising” will be later this year on HBO.
Evan Rachel Wood had a relationship with Marilyn Manson from 2006 to 2010. After their separation, the actress became an active defender of the victims of domestic violence, using her own story.
In February 2021, the actress publicly accused the musician of years of harassment. Manson denied the allegations, but in the following months Wood was joined by several other women who also filed lawsuits against the rocker. During the scandal, Marilyn Manson lost her contract with the label and several film roles, and at the end of the year, his home was searched.
Amy Berg says that Evan Rachel Wood approached her with the idea for the film back in 2019. Initially, Berg was supposed to act only as one of the producers, but during the Kovid-19 pandemic she decided to shoot it herself.
“We focused on telling this story, which could inspire other victims of violence. Wood was very direct with us“, shares the director.
The Sundance Festival will be held from 20 to 30 January 2022 in virtual format.
