Today’s holiday – the Day of Courage, in Sozopol – began with the raising of the flags of the municipal organization of the Union of Reserve and Reserve Officers and Sergeants.
The ritual was performed by Father Dimitar in front of the church “St. George”. From there, a procession started with battle flags to the arch, on which are written the names of the citizens of Sozopol municipality who died in the wars.
The Chairman of the Union of Reserve and Reserve Officers and Sergeants and Chairman of the Municipal Council, Stanimir Andonov, spoke about the military exploits of the Bulgarian army and why St. George’s Day is important for current and former military personnel, as well as for citizens. He also reminded of the heroism of those who fell for the freedom of Bulgaria.
The mayor of the municipality of Sozopol, Tihomir Yanakiev, addressed the audience with an emotional speech:
“Today is a day when we pay tribute to those who, at the cost of their spilled blood and with the blades of their bayonets, allowed Bulgaria to exist, allowed us to exist as a nation.
Today is also a day to pay our respects to those who have now assumed this duty from the fallen. I thank the people who give their service to the Bulgarian army and protect us in such a challenging world.
I am sure that Bulgaria and the Bulgarian people will have them as long as the Bulgarian heart beats. Happy holiday!”
Captain 1st rank Petar Petrov – commander of the Naval Base – Burgas also congratulated those present on the holiday and paid tribute to his colleagues who died for the homeland.
Wreaths and flowers were laid as a sign of respect by the mayor Tihomir Yanakiev, the municipal administration, the municipal council, BSP, GERB, the officers and sergeants of the reserve and club “Bulgarka”, the Civic Association “Rakovski, Levski, Botev” and citizens.
Those present honored the memory of the dead with a moment of silence.
After the ceremony, a celebration began with dances, songs, painted eggs and kozunaci, organized by the Thracian Association “Yani Popov” Sozopol.
