Santiago. The Chilean authorities are investigating a second complaint of alleged rape against retired soccer player Jorge Valdivia, champion of the 2015 Copa América with the Chilean team, who has been in preventive detention since the day before for another similar accusation.
The Prosecutor’s Office reported on Wednesday that it received a new complaint against the former player a few hours after the court ordered his preventive arrest for representing “a danger to society and the victim.”
“Yesterday, a new complaint was submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office, from a new victim, against Jorge Valdivia for the crime of rape,” the Public Ministry indicated in a message sent to journalists. The institution added that it will not provide further information on the case in order to protect the victim.
At the moment, prosecutors added, the facts are being investigated, so Valdivia, 41, has not yet been formally charged. This is the second rape complaint against the former Colo-Colo player for this crime.
The day before, a Chilean court decreed Valdivia’s preventive detention for 90 days in the framework of an investigation into an alleged rape against a woman last Sunday. The events would have occurred after a meeting in a Peruvian restaurant in the commune (municipality) of Providencia, in the Chilean capital. The following morning, the alleged victim filed a complaint with the Legal Medical Service, which was accepted as flagrante delicto.
As was learned during the formalization hearing, as in Chile the opening of a formal investigation against an accused is known, the former soccer player and the woman had two cocktails at the restaurant. Afterwards, the woman stated that she does not remember anything else about what happened. On Monday, upon waking up with “apparent signs of sexual assault,” the alleged victim sought help from the Legal Medical Service.
Valdivia also has another investigation open against him for an alleged case of physical assault on another woman, a precedent that contributed to the decision of the magistrate who ordered his preventive detention.
A midfielder, who was considered one of the most talented players in Chilean soccer, Valdivia trained in the lower divisions of Colo Colo, where he established himself from 2005. He had a brief stint in European soccer and stood out during his stay with Brazilian Palmeiras. He also played for Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates before returning to Chilean football.
From 2004 to 2017, he was an absolute international with the Chilean team, with which he won the Copa América that was held in the country in 2015. However, his regularity in the national team was worn down by some disciplinary infractions that caused him They generated various suspensions.
