After coming out as non-binary, as well as speaking openly about his self-esteem issues, body image, and how therapy helped him work through them, Sam Smith has been the target of attacks like the one he suffered in New York, also in his own country, as he himself mentioned in an interview with Apple Music.

“They verbally attack me in the street more than ever. I think that was the hardest part, being at home in the UK and having people yell at me in the street,” revealed the artist, who claimed that one person even spat at him in the street.
