Lower Manhattan residents now have a new way to dispose of their food waste in a way that benefits the environment.
Ten smart containers composting have been installed south of Chamber Street This is an initiative of the City Department of Cleaning, in conjunction with the Alliance for Downtown New York.
All people have to do is scan a QR code, register the container that is nearby, and the container will automatically open.
New Yorkers can use them to dispose of coffee waste, banana peels, and more, instead of sending them to landfills.
“The waste going to landfills emits methanol and it is very dangerous for the environment. And when we use composting that is how we use our waste for parks and gardens”, explains Vincent Gragniani from the municipal Cleaning Department.
The agency is also testing a similar smart compost bin program in Astoria.
These containers require a free access card that people can sign up for by going to the web: smartcompost.nyc
