They insist on the release of former Vice President Glas of Ecuador – 2024-10-06 04:13:59

Quito/Prensa Latina

The International Committee for the Liberation of the Former Vice President of Ecuador Jorge Glas requested this Friday the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to expand the precautionary measures in favor of the politician, currently imprisoned.

Through its social network

More than 100 personalities, including former presidents, prominent jurists, intellectuals and human rights defenders from Latin America and Europe, signed the document sent to the IACHR.

Sacha Llorenti, coordinator of the Committee, recalled that at the request of the Ecuadorian State, the visit of an IACHR delegation to the La Roca maximum security prison, where Glas is being held, was postponed because government officials were going to be out of the country.

In the text, the members of the international group insisted that Glas suffers from chronic illnesses and his life is at risk because he does not have night security, since there is no one in the adjacent cells.

The letter was sent one day before six months passed since the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where the former vice president had remained as a political asylum since December 2023.

On April 5, uniformed officers raided the diplomatic legation to capture him by order of President Daniel Noboa.

On August 6, the Ecuadorian Government reiterated its position that the granting of diplomatic asylum to Glas “is not lawful” and that it will not grant him safe passage to leave the country.

This announcement by the Executive took place one day after the Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requested permission for Glas to be handed over and transferred to a third country, in accordance with Article XIX of the Caracas Convention.
