They initiate a class action lawsuit against Royal Caribbean after discovering an employee recording tourists without permission – Diario La Página –

Royal Caribbean is facing a class-action lawsuit after it was discovered that an employee secretly recorded passengers aboard its Symphony of the Seas cruise ship.

According to the media Vice, it is alleged that up to 960 passengers could have been filmed by a hidden camera in the bathroom of one of the cabins. The lawsuit was filed by an unidentified woman (Jane Doe) on behalf of “all other similarly situated passengers” after a passenger found a camera under the sink of her cabin earlier this year.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported that Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a Royal Caribbean cabin attendant, installed these cameras and also hid under passengers’ beds to observe them. It was captured thanks to the intervention of a guest who discovered the device and reported it to ship security.

Mirasol, 34, pleaded guilty to voyeurism and possession of child pornography, receiving a sentence of 30 years in federal prison. According to the United States Department of Justice, the 30-year prison sentence was handed down by District Judge Melissa Damian on August 28.

During the investigation, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) of Fort Lauderdale and Customs Aborder Protection (CBP) discovered numerous videos on their devices, including images of minors between the ages of 2 and 17.

It is estimated that Mirasol’s illegal activities began in December 2023.

The lawsuit seeks to get Royal Caribbean to take responsibility and take preventive measures so that similar incidents do not occur again. Bernardo Pimentel, the victim’s attorney, said: “If we hold these cruise lines accountable, they can proactively look for this misconduct before it happens.”

These lawsuits highlight the urgent need for stricter safety protocols and effective oversight in the cruise industry, parties involved have said in interviews.
