The Vice Minister of the Interior, Julio Diaz Zulueta, inaugurated the renovated José Carlos Mariátegui park, in San Juan de Miraflores, which has children’s games and mini gyms made with the steel resulting from more than 6 thousand firearms.
Said weaponry, recovered from the streets thanks to the work of the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the National Superintendency of Control of Security Services, Weapons, Ammunition and Explosives for Civil Use (SUCAMEC), was melted down in a joint effort with the steel company SIDERPERU.
This work also included the participation of the Barrio Seguro multisector strategy, because the José Carlos Mariátegui park is located within the jurisdiction of the Pompeyo neighborhood, a district attached to the aforementioned program of the Ministry of the Interior.
The Vice Minister of the Interior, Julio Díaz Zulueta, welcomed the execution of this initiative which, according to Barrio Seguro projections, will benefit hundreds of families in vulnerable situations, generating spaces of social peace and healthy fun.
With this launch, Lima has two parks with recreational and sports equipment made from the foundry of weapons that, previously, represented a threat to public safety and the internal order of the country.
Diaz Zulueta stressed that, through SUCAMEC, the control of firearms for civilian use will be reinforced, through the execution of inspection actions at the national level.
This provision is part of the Government’s policy, to remove the largest amount of weapons from circulation and thus raise security standards for the benefit of all Peruvians, as announced by Premier Gustavo Adrianzén, upon reaching the figure of 4,200 shares. control of firearms.
10,000 weapons will be melted down in 2024
For his part, the national superintendent of SUCAMEC, Teófilo Mariño, announced that this year an average of 10,000 firearms will be destroyed, coming from the seizures of these devices in criminal acts and also recovered by voluntary internment in warehouses. the entity.
In 2023, the destruction of 21,497 firearms for civilian use was completed and recovered nationwide. This material was finished melting on November 22 at the SIDERPERU steel plant in Chimbote for the manufacture of new sports and recreational equipment that will be delivered to two more neighborhoods, starting in the second half of the year.
