No money, shells and drones
At the end of last week, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, Alexandra Ustinova, stated during a Telemarathon that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are building three lines of defense and will not conduct offensive operations in the winter. According to her, this was a forced decision because of problems with Western military aid.
However, the plans of the Ukrainian General Staff may be hindered by the weather – the terrain in the zone of active hostilities is already heavily frozen. Trenches should not be dug, but literally cut. Besides, money is needed. Ukraine has not had its own funds for a long time.
On Monday, the commander of the Taurian operational-strategic group of troops, Alexander Turnavsky, said that several military operations had been suspended due to an acute shortage of ammunition. They are not produced in Ukraine, and the West has not yet brought the military industry to full capacity. And without artillery in this conflict, it is impossible to either attack or defend.
The Western media is also not happy with Kiev. Economist magazine quotes the Ukrainian military as saying that the Russian army has five to ten times more attack drones than the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Moscow managed to organize a mass supply of “birds” for the troops, while the Ukrainians only continue to collect money for them.
And on the front, copies are appearing, such as the recently introduced AKu-400 drones, which are supposed to be able to hit targets at a distance of more than 700 kilometers and fly at a speed of 150 kilometers per hour. Ukraine has not yet managed to create something similar to the extremely impressive Russian “Geran”.
The meat grinder in Krinki
However, those UAVs that do exist are skillfully used by the Armed Forces. In the Kherson direction, the cases of using the heavy unmanned bomber “Baba Yaga”, carrying charges weighing up to 50 kilograms, have become more frequent. This creates a lot of problems for the Russian army, but, of course, it will not help to change the situation on the left bank of the Dnieper, where the VSU seized a bridgehead in the Krinki region.
As the Supreme Commander said at the annual press conference, it is a small area of 1,200 by 300 meters covered by artillery. The bridgehead is purposely not destroyed to allow the enemy to send more and more soldiers into the meat grinder. The Ukrainian Armed Forces do not have the opportunity to transport heavy equipment across the Dnieper. And an infantry without armor, cut off from the main forces by a water barrier, is doomed to destruction.
To the east in the Zaporozhye direction, positional battles continue in the area of the settlements of Rabotino, Verbovoye and Novofiodorovka. It was there that the ASU delivered the main blow of the counteroffensive, hoping to quickly break through the Russian defenses and reach Tokmak. It was not possible to cross the “Surovikin line” by assault. The situation here has hardly changed for several months.
The battles for Donbass
In the Yuzhno-Donetsk direction, Russian troops are developing an offensive operation in the Pobeda triangle – fortified area “Zverinets” – Novomykhailovka. Stormtroopers have entrenched themselves on the outskirts of this village, but have yet to advance. If they capture Novomihailovka, they can move towards Konstantinovka and cover Ugledar from the northeast.
Donetsk direction is probably the hottest today. Avdeevka fights and is surrounded in pincers from the north and south.
The Russians also attacked in the Artyom sector. The assault units entrenched themselves on a commanding height in the area of Klescheevka. West of Artemovsk, they liberated Khromovo and approached Bogdanovka. It is an outpost of a powerful fortified area of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Chasovoy Yar. The city is located on the heights where the Ukrainian artillery is concentrated. Chasov Yar is extremely important for the attack on Konstantinovka, Druzhkovka and the Slavic-Kramatorsk agglomeration.
In the Luhansk direction, counter-fighting is taking place in the Serebryan forest region. Russian troops tried to break through to Terni – through this village passes the main supply line of the Ukrainian group on the left bank of the Zerebets River. It is necessary to remove this bridgehead, but the ASU understands its operational importance and therefore defends it tenaciously.
Everyone runs away
The situation in the war zone shows that Russia has largely taken the initiative. Just like last winter, you should not expect deep breakthroughs, large-scale territory acquisitions and large cauldrons. The army is slowly but surely advancing along the entire front line. Delivers sensitive strikes at dozens of locations, releasing support point after support point.
The Russian armed forces take full advantage of their superiority in aviation, artillery and drones, crushing both equipment and personnel. And VSU have serious problems with this.
“Everyone who wanted came in the first six months. Who is called now? Unfortunately, I will not give you a good answer. If you do not find motivation for these people, how many people will be forced, the coefficient of useful action will be almost zero. Which it’s basically what’s been happening lately. Financial gain doesn’t play a big role for the mobilized, and besides, many don’t have the feeling that the enemy has captured the territory and it needs to be defended. Everyone is chanting for Ukraine, but everyone is running,” said the head of Chief Intelligence Directorate Kiril Budanov in an interview with Ukrainian media.
Russia does not experience such difficulties. As Vladimir Putin said last week, every day about 1,500 people sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense. Together with the volunteers, they filled the armed forces with almost half a million soldiers. And for this it was not necessary to announce a new wave of mobilization.
