“This is motivation to continue demonstrating what I am capable of, continue competing abroad and show that I am at a high level,” said taekwondo athlete Benjamín Bastías, one of the 38 chillanejos who received the 2023 Outstanding Athletes Municipal Scholarship this year, thanks to his different achievements in Chile and abroad, leaving the name of Chillán high.
It should be noted that this 2023 the number of scholarship recipients increased, surpassing the 27 of last year, with a total amount to be distributed of $44 million versus $30 million in 2022.
Beyond the numbers, the mayor of Chillán, Camilo Benavente, highlighted the spirit behind the awarding of the scholarships. “With creativity we invented a management model to contribute to projection athletes, municipalities in general do not have an organization that allows fresh resources to be delivered directly to individuals, but rather to institutions. However, we invented a management model to award scholarships to athletes who have performed and have been outstanding, which is why we have been replicated in other communes”.
Another of the beneficiaries was the Paralympic tennis player Joseline Yévenes, who added that “we have always said that the Municipality is a fundamental support to develop us as athletes, I am very grateful, this help will help me a lot,” said the person who will participate in Santiago 2023.
The scholarship is a competitive fund that allows exponents of different disciplines to represent the commune in high-performance competition at a regional, national or international level and whose objective is to back, encourage and support competitive sports development in different disciplines.
It should be noted that the scholarship considers a financing line of $2 million, another of $1 million, and the third of $500,000, which can be used for transfers, specific food or contracting services, according to the needs of each athlete.
The application process was carried out through the Sports Directorate, from where they value the support for the chillanejos and chillanejas.
