German scientists have found that variant A.30 of the coronavirus is extremely successful in avoiding antibodies produced by the immune system, reports BTA.
As only four cases of infection with this strain have been reported worldwide and none of them have occurred in the last five months, researchers hope that A.30 has already disappeared, displaced by more contagious variants of SARS-CoV- 2.
“Probably the variant has already disappeared and we don’t need to worry about it,” said Prof. Cyril Cohen, head of the immunology laboratory at Bar-Ilan University.
According to the results of the study published in Nature, the A.30 strain probably originated in Tanzania and was registered in Angola and Sweden.
It is characterized by a significant mutation in the spiny protein against which antibodies caused by vaccines act.
