They found a statue of Venus de Milo – 2024-03-10 20:09:27

/ world today news/ Venus of Milos is the name of one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculptural art. It was discovered on April 8, 1820 among the ruins of the ancient city of Milos on the island of the same name in the White Sea. It is believed to depict the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite (in Latin, Venus). It is currently in the Louvre in Paris.

The statue is of Paros marble, 203 cm high. Its arms are broken off and lost, as is the original plinth (the slab that serves as a base). It is dated to 130 – 90 BC. and is believed to be the work of Alexander of Antioch, although in the past it was wrongly attributed to Praxiteles (who died two centuries before). The composition is a mixture of early styles in the classical period of Greek sculpture.

Fragments of a left hand holding an apple, believed to belong to her, were also found in the niche where the statue was discovered. However, numerous attempts to restore the sculpture to its original pose were unsuccessful.

The possible presence of an apple in the composition could refer to Paris, who decided to give the golden apple to Aphrodite. Another possible explanation is that in ancient Greek “milos” means “apple”.
