They foresee a long and hostile US electoral campaign – Diario La Página – 2024-03-17 03:08:16

The president of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, and former Republican president Donald Trump, mathematically converted into the candidates for the White House, inaugurated this Wednesday a bloody electoral campaign full of personal attacks and which is expected to be especially bitter and hostile.

In a sign of months of crossfire ahead, both leaders took aim at each other after winning the nomination on Tuesday. And Biden attacked Trump’s “campaign of resentment and revenge.”

Faced with the prospect of a long, crude and tight campaign, the Democratic president began a tour last Friday in Pennsylvania of several of the key states that will decide the November elections.

This Wednesday in Milwaukee (Wisconsin), when inaugurating his campaign headquarters in that city, Biden attacked his Republican rival for describing immigrants as “vermin.”

«We are a country of immigrants. “They are not vermin,” Biden said, referring to comments Trump made last year. Trump has also referred to the fact that immigrants “poison the blood of our country.”

Biden has also compared him to Nazis for his harsh rhetoric against immigrants.

Trump “the loser”
«Many of you helped me in 2020 and we made sure I was a loser. And we’re going to make sure that happens again, right?’ Biden told supporters and local volunteers in Milwaukee, the same city where Trump and his party will hold the Republican National Convention in July.

Biden has repeatedly called Trump a loser, knowing that it irritates the defeated former president, who still refuses to acknowledge that he lost four years ago.

The two candidates, the oldest ever, do not hide the personal resentment between them, especially after their clash in the 2020 elections won by Biden.

The president highlighted his rival’s promise to forgive on the first day of his administration his supporters who violently assaulted the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in Washington to try to reverse Trump’s electoral defeat and highlighted that these militants “placed a dagger down the throat of American democracy.

Biden “the most incompetent”
For his part, Trump responded by calling Biden on social media the “worst, most incompetent, corrupt and destructive president in American history.”

On Tuesday, Biden and Trump achieved the majority of delegates necessary to win the primaries 239 days before the November 5 election. They did it at the same time, after winning Georgia, Mississippi and Washington state.

It will therefore be one of the longest campaigns in modern US history, comparable to those of 2000 and 2004.

But the political climate has changed a lot in these two decades and the tension of an almost eight-month electoral campaign between Trump and Biden is unprecedented.

The two candidates also have high rejection rates and it will be the voters who have a negative view of both Biden and Trump who end up saying the race.

Biden has a rejection of 58%, while that of Trump is 57%, according to a January survey by the Gallup consulting firm.
