The Mayor of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança, admitted today that the realization of the comedy show with about a thousand people “Gave a signal that contradicts all the recent speech” of the municipality in relation to covid-19, even considering that “the past image was destructive of everything that Câmara is doing”.
Cited in a statement, Domingos Bragança added that the entire communication effort of the municipality in preventing the covid-19 “cannot be compromised by cultural or other events, which may bring together a large number of people”.
Speaking at the end of the executive meeting, the mayor thus justified the decision, announced on Sunday, to suspend the holding of cultural events in the municipality’s facilities until the Civil Protection meeting, which will take place on Tuesday.
“I want to hear from the health delegates on the matter, as well as those responsible for the other entities, as the situation we are experiencing in the municipality of Guimarães may require the adoption of more restrictive measures”, he said.
On Friday night, a show at Multiusos de Guimarães with comedians Hugo Sousa, Ana Garcia Martins (Pipoca mais Doce) and Nilton. According to the municipality, it brought together 964 people, which corresponds to 40 percent of the space’s capacity.
Thus, according to the municipality, the contingency plan approved by the health authorities was fulfilled.
The show was promoted by “Tempo Livre”, a cooperative regimen that has 65 members, with the City Council as its main shareholder.
On Sunday, and “in the face of news and images” about the show, which suggested despite the health safety rules associated with the covid-19, the Chamber determined the temporary suspension of the shows scheduled for all cultural facilities in the municipality.
“More than complying with the rules, the perception of less stringent requirements in the pandemic protection rules that we pass on to all of our citizens is at stake,” explained Domingos Bragança today.
The statement recalls that the position of the mayor in the face of the increase in cases of covid-19 in the municipality “has been of utmost prudence”, as an example is the advice on the use of a mask in a public space, a measure, until now, not adopted by the Board. -General Health.
The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than one million and seventy-seven thousand deaths and more than 37.5 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
In Portugal, 2,094 people died from 87,913 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
