they fish 52 self-service bicycles in the Ourcq canal

A scooter, traffic signs and … 52 Vélib ‘with, for some, eels and catfish in the basket: magnet fishermen from Seine-Saint-Denis made an improbable harvest last weekend by probing the Ourcq canal in Pantin.

“It was incredible, in half an hour, we went up twenty” of these Vélib ‘, said Tuesday Clément Charret, who has been practicing this activity for a year and a half, “to have fun and especially to clean up”. With his sidekick Enzo, known as “Magneto”, he “found everything” in the canals of his department but never imagined putting up so many of these self-service bicycles, on a single site.

In front of the Grand Moulins de Pantin, dozens of bicycles lined up, covered with mud, draw a strange picture, a sort of amphibious Vélib ‘station.

A bayonet, a revolver, two shells …

Living in Pavillons-sous-Bois, this 20-year-old Staps student bought himself “a little magnet” after seeing videos of “ChrisDetek”, “the magnet fishing mentor” on YouTube. He first explored the rivers of his department on his own, before founding his association, the Magnet club pavillonnais.

His best catches? “A bayonet from the First World War and a barrel revolver from the Napoleon III era”. Last year, he also recovered two World War II shells, which required the intervention of deminers.

Tuesday, about fifteen bikes, “the most recent”, according to Clément Charret, had been recovered by the operator. The rest should be picked up by garbage collection services.
