They find another place in northern Neuquén with rock art that was hidden behind a waterfall

Luis Bustos found the piece that the Neuquén archaeologists were missing in order to complete the puzzle of the activities carried out by man in northern Neuquén thousands of years ago. The Chos Malal resident found rock art in the Ñorquín department, near El Cholar and El Huecú. That site you found will now bear your name.

Last week, Bustos sent an email to the provincial address of Cultural Heritage. He mentioned that there was engraved on an eaves and on an isolated rock. There was also the intervention of current engravings that deteriorate the old ones. In that sector caves with archaeological material were also found.

The finding could reveal the processes of the Neuquén settlement linked to the discovery of rock art, linked to the extreme north of Neuquén in the Huenul Cave, dating from 7000 to 3000 years and Epullan Grande from 9000 years ago. Footprints like in Butalón Norte, animals like in Pilo Lil and traces similar to those of the Epullan Grande cave reveal the importance of the current Route 21, parallel to National Route 40 where these sites are linked to crossroads and steps towards Chile.

“We had a Mines department full of sites and we were missing a part. Apparently there are many more places to the south. We were able to find this site because the waterfall that covered it dried up, thanks to the complaint of Mr. Bustos, “said the archaeologist of the Cultural Heritage Directorate, Claudia Della Negra.

The archaeological material allows us to recognize that the traces were made with some element or with the fingers in the volcanic mud. This site was hidden behind a waterfall and, as a result of the drought, was exposed.

The archaeologist explained that this site is complemented by the comparison of the sites in the Minas department. For example, the sites of Pilo Lil and that of the Rio del Valle Limay. “We had an information gap and this finding allows us to complete part of the puzzle. This void is completed with the Ñorquín department where there are drawings and motifs from the southern zone and drawings and motifs from the Minas department ”, added Della Negra.

The site will be analyzed by specialists through excavations and comparative analysis of the motifs. The analyzes will be able to determine its age.

As is customary in these cases of complaint, the finding will be baptized with the name of the complainant.
