A man was found dead near a playground in Central Park with cuts and wounds to his neck and torso, the NYPD said.
The 36-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was found outside on the floor of the Hecksher Playground around 8:37 a.m. Monday by a Central Park Conservancy worker, NYPD said. He was officially pronounced dead at the scene located in the area near Central Drive around 62nd Street in the southernmost part of the park.
The man presented wounds in the stomach, chest and neck area. A bloody knife was found in his pocket, said the police, who initially did not determine whether it was homicide or suicide, he noted. NBC News.
“At this point in our investigation, we have not made a complete determination until the autopsy. However, our theory in the investigation indicates that the injuries may have been self-inflicted,” said NYPD Northern Manhattan District Commander Raul Stephenson.
The playground was closed for the rest of the day Monday. While it was initially believed that a shoelace was found around his neck, police later said it was the drawstring of her hoodie that appeared to be wrapped around his neck. No other information was available and the investigation was ongoing.
The discovery of bodies in public places is common in New York and sometimes it takes time to identify the victims. Last week a man was found dead in the brush on a road in The Bronx. Then a 20-year-old man died after collapsing in the front yard of a single-family home in Queens (NYC) and residents said they have no idea who he was.
In late November a young man and woman were found dead within hours of each other in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
In the middle of that month, a body without a head or arms was found in the sand of a beach in the Rockaways neighborhood. It was the third body found in a public area in Queens in less than a week.
At the end of October an adult human body was found inside a garbage bag on a street in The Bronx (NYC). In September, a body with larvae was found in the parking lot of a TD Bank branch in Queens (NYC).
In the summer of this year, a body was found floating in a lake in the northern area of Central Park. Last November 2022, a man was found dead hanging by his neck in a popular area of Central Park: at East Drive and East 72nd Street, behind the iconic “Naumberg Bandshell” amphitheater. At the time it was the third case of suicide in New York parks in recent weeks.
Additionally, several bodies were found in 2022 in Central Park. In mid-October, an elderly man was found dead in a pond, days after the partially decomposed body of a young man was discovered floating in a lake near 79th Street and West Drive, with no signs of foul play.
In July 2022, the death of a young Latino homeless man was declared a homicide almost 10 months after his body was found with a rope around his neck in Central Park, giving the initial impression that he had committed suicide.
Also that month, Phil Guarino (28), a young construction worker in Queens, was dumped dead in the driveway of a house in Brooklyn from a hand truck.
