OTHON P. BLANCO, QRoo, April 10, 2021. – Given the lack of information on the strategies to combat sargassum, and despite the projections of the Secretary of the Navy for this season, the inhabitants and providers of tourist services of The Costa Maya expressed their concern about the possibility of repeating the same mistakes of last year, since the actions that were implemented did not give results.
The representative of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) in Mahahual, Gerardo Pérez, confirmed that the antisargasse barriers have not been installed because the placement of the anchors is missing. He revealed that there is no date for the installation of the inter-institutional committee that must address the sargassum problem.
Although sargasso are already in the area, businessmen do not know if they will work because they are designed for a sea without waves, for lakes or lagoons and not for the Caribbean Sea.
