/ world today news/ The winner of the presidential elections in Argentina, Javier Millay, arrived on a visit to the USA to establish contacts. It is true that in Buenos Aires, judging by some data, they are already abandoning excessive rapprochement with Washington. Read what’s changed in the article.
„“Spiritual” journey
There is still more than a week until the inauguration, but Miley has already felt like the master of the country and is actively getting to work.
The libertarian (as he positions himself) came to power with a far-right populist agenda tied primarily to the economy. The country has big problems with it – since the beginning of the year, inflation has exceeded 60%. Millay promised to literally destroy the Central Bank and switch from the peso to the dollar.
He is also against joining BRICS, which was agreed upon in August. Now that is in question.
It is symptomatic that Miley made her first foreign visit to the United States. However, as noted by La Nacion, the main purpose of the trip was “spiritual”, namely a visit to the grave of Hasidic leader Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in New York. Miley has repeatedly spoken of his closeness to the Jewish faith and traditions. After that, he plans to go to Israel.
The dollar can wait
He was accompanied by Argentina’s former finance minister Luis Caputo (who has been tapped to head the Ministry of Economy) as well as Nicolas Posse (probable prime minister).
The delegation met with representatives of the US Treasury Department, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Shortly before the trip, Miley held a telephone conversation with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. The parties did not release details of the conversation, but there is a lot to talk about: Buenos Aires owes the fund $44 billion. Mauricio Macri, then the president of Argentina and now one of Millet’s main allies, agreed with her in 2018 to delay the payment.
As for the US representatives, sources in Buenos Aires said, the purpose of the talks with them was to “explain the economic plan of the new (Argentine) administration, including financial adjustments, monetary reform, government reform and deregulation.” There is no mention of loans or any mutual discounts. In addition, Millay had lunch with Bill Clinton, who is “very much on the other side of the ideological divide,” the US media noted in turn. This meeting was “a particularly unexpected part of the first trip abroad.”
This behavior by Miley contradicts his recent rhetoric and promises to move to the dollar. Moreover, the Financial Times reports, this idea may be shelved altogether. As the publication recalls, the newly elected president wanted to appoint Emilio Ocampo, an ardent supporter of dollarization, as the head of the Argentine Central Bank. Now, says a source close to the economist, the application has been withdrawn from consideration. This means that Millay does not intend to “replace” the peso for US currency in the short term.
“Communists” are undisputed partners
This is not the first signal of a softening of the president’s position regarding his pre-election plans. Late last week, his cabinet called rumors about the promised “destruction” of the Central Bank false and non-negotiable. The head of state himself noted that before switching to the dollar, it is necessary to study “whether the situation allows it.”
The layout also changes along the outer perimeter. If Millay recently called Brazilian President Lula da Silva “a communist with whom he will not do business”, now he has invited him to the inauguration on December 10. Foreign Policy Advisor Diana Mondino went to Brazil with the relevant invitation. “The main message is that we are brotherly countries. And we will remain so,” said the diplomat. “We must work hard together to ensure the growth of both countries.” “It’s one thing to criticize an ideology and another to criticize a person. We have to separate the state, the government and the people,” said Mondino, quoted by Bloomberg.
However, she did not say whether she had discussed Argentina’s future in BRICS with her Brazilian counterparts. She simply noted, “We already work with almost all the countries of the association.” One of those countries is China, which has also been criticized by the new Argentine leader. “I am a defender of freedom, peace and democracy. The Communists and the Chinese have nothing to do with it,” he said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson in September.
Now Miley replaced her anger with mercy. On the X social network the other day, he thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for congratulating him on his election and sent his “sincerest wishes for the well-being of the Chinese people.” Brazil and China are Argentina’s main trading partners, so the desire to maintain relations with them is understandable. The question is how countries will react. Washington is used to seeing Latin America as its “backyard.” But his latest bet on Miley, even being called the local Trump, apparently isn’t working so far.
