They extended the term of copyright to 70 years –

Now the former members of the British group The Beatles and other rock and pop artists will be able to receive income from their songs for another 20 years.

The European Union extended the term of copyright from 50 to 70 years, ITAR-TASS reported. After the measure was confirmed by the Council of the EU, former members of the British group The Beatles and other rock and pop artists will be able to receive income from their songs for another 20 years.

The first hit of the Beatles “Love Me Do”, which was released in 1962, was supposed to go to compositions with expired copyrights next year. The ruling also affects the works of other early 1960s stars such as the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Edin Piaf.

The copyright extension claim was brought to the EU by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The organization insisted that the term be extended to 95 years, but the EU decided to limit it to 70 years.

The petition with the request has been signed by about 40,000 musicians. Now individual member countries have to align their copyright legislation with European norms for 2 years.
