They exported 440 tons of asphalt from Suchý žleb in the Moravian Karst. The road at the bottom was torn up by a lot of water

“We had to put in an excavator to clear the asphalt piles. The road is cleared. However, care must be taken when passing through on bicycles. There are even four-centimeter steps on it,” said Antonín Tůma from the karst administration to Novinkám. In terms of nature conservation, the repair of the road is not considered.

Pay attention to the unevenness of the road

The five-kilometer trail Suchy connects the main tourist center of the karst, Skalní mlýn, and Vilémovice. Once this road was a classic road with busy car traffic. In the mid-nineties, however, Suchý chleb and the nearby Pustý chleb, in which the Punk caves are located, were completely closed to vehicles. In some places, the road is surrounded by greenery.

440 tons of asphalt were exported from Suchý žleb.

There was a tumultuous protest against the closure. But conservationists got their way, saying that the gullies are located in the Vývěry Punkva National Nature Reserve, ie in the most valuable natural part of the karst. Barriers prevent cars from entering chutes. They are a cyclist’s paradise. After the floods, however, it is no longer possible to release the brake and enjoy the ride when going down Suchý žleb. It is necessary to pay attention to inequalities.

It took several weeks to clear the asphalt patches.

A large crowd of tourists is heading to the canyon

The dry gully is one of the most popular parts of the karst. There are caves on the rocky slopes, in places by the road. 40,000 tourists visit the Kateřinská cave alone every year.

The famous Kateřinská cave is also accessible to the public in Suché žleb.

The most attractive part of the gorge is mainly the Čertův rock gate, through which, according to legends, you can walk all the way to hell. It is similar to the Pravčická Gate. Although not many tourists know about it, Devil’s Bridge was as famous as the nearby Macocha Abyss in the 19th century. But now the view is hidden by trees. The way to him is closed. The bridge in thick forest can be accessed from only one place on the road.

There is also a rock formation Devil’s Bridge in Suché Zleb.

Heavy rain caused extensive damage in the Moravian Karst in September. Uprooted trees had to be removed in the forests. The high water washed away part of the Sloupsko-šošův caves, which are accessible to the public, and also damaged the electrical installation on the boat trip in the Punkevní Caves. It is still partially closed. Operations should be fully restored next spring.
